Course Outline

The jewellery-making weekend workshop, with established West Cork fashion-designer and jeweller Flicky Howe, covers all the basic skills of designing, threading, knotting, fitting crimps and finishing and allows participants to develop and make their own style of work, to take home.

The programme includes:

Day 1:
Brooch Project (using various materials including ribbon, beads and feathers we create a pretty corsage/brooch suitable for decorating an outfit or fashion accessory such as a bag or hat)
The brooch project is a simple exercise in which useful techniques are learned which can be later adapted to milinery projects.

Beading Project (using beautiful glass beads)
The beading project applies a simple beading technique which can be used for a multiple of jewellery pieces. For this project we make a glimmering hairslide with a selection of glass beads and findings.

Beaded Ring & Earrings Project
Using the techniques learned in the beading project, participants create a stunning beaded ring and matching earrings.

Tigertail Techniques
Tigertail is a very useful and versatile jewellery making wire which is nylon coated. It can be used for simple bead stringing or with various findings to create "floating" beaded pieces. Using tigertail wire and crimps (small metal beads which can be flattened) participants make a simple necklace, bracelet & earrings set.

Day 2:
Day 2 begins with a demonstration on creating simple hair accessories suitable for weddings or other special occassions. Materials are discussed and useful sources for jewellery making supplies are disclosed! And then the real fun begins!!......

Day 2 of the jewellery making course is all about exploring various materials, ideas and techniques to come up with an individual piece of jewellery. Participants are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild, to create something to their own specific taste, employing some or all of the techniques learnt on day 1. Participants may make a crazy feather and bead tiara or perhaps a necklace dripping in glass beads. Help is on hand to make sure their individual creation is secure and well finished.

Lunch is provided on both days.
