Fiona Calnan

Fiona Calnan biography

Fiona Calnan is a Visual Artist specialising in Drawing. She grew up in London however spent regular periods of time in Kinsale, Ireland where she now lives. Her work and approach to it is informed by her relationship with both places and the rich contrast between them. Fiona studied Art & Design at Blackheath School of Art and gained an honours degree in Fine Art from Kingston University. Since leaving University, she has been developing her independent art practice and has exhibited her work regularly in various venues in Cork, Ireland. As well as focusing on the development of her own work, Fiona runs drawing and life drawing workshops and has organised community oriented exhibitions with the intention of encouraging creativity in others.

Artist Statement
I am a Visual Artist whose specialism is drawing. Through Drawing, I am trying to reach some understanding of how freedom and the expression of individuality are possible within a pre-determined structure. I am fascinated by our need for a framework with which to facilitate the expression of freedom. Drawing is the vehicle through which I feel most able to investigate this.
My formal art training was varied, combining a traditional approach while on foundation with a more conceptual, ideas led degree course. On leaving University I became involved in music, working with Hip-hop and Dance Artists as a singer and song-writer. I also became increasingly pulled towards sport such as running, kayaking, surfing, and most recently Capoeira.
My art training, experience in music and my approach to sport, all combine to inform and lead my visual art practice. I see parallels between them and drawing: all have a strong discipline and set of formulas or patterns at their core yet are vehicles for extremes of expression and creativity.
My influences range from the great masters to ‘Outsiders’, Graffiti and Storyboard artists, tattooists, my maternal grandparents and what I call throwaway media: sweet wrappers, newspapers and comics, adverts, doodles and ‘notes to self’ as left on napkins or post-its. Any kind of drawing is a source of inspiration, whether technical, communicative, expressive or made just for kicks. Ultimately, I am influenced by the street and what I grew up with – could see, hear, touch, coming from a council estate in Chelsea, London. It was always about the ‘mix’ and making an effort...and it still is but I can see the street more clearly from the edge of the ocean.
My current work juxtaposes the traditional approach to the figure and its representation in drawing with street-based art and the toilet doodle. Underpinning the juxtaposition of the genteel with the street is a strong work ethic – after all, it’s all about making an effort.

Personal Statement

My paintings are of a semi-abstract nature. The inspiration for my work begins with rough sketches of the subject I have in my mind. This could be the drama of the environment, which surrounds me, the ever changing weather, a piece of music, or just the fun of experimenting with different mediums in a painting. As a work develops, the painting evolves and finds its own place. I am always conscious of colour, shape and form and have an intuitive response to playing with these three elements. I try not to impose too many disciplines on my work so allowing it to find its own resolve.
